Ladies and Gentlemen, I submit for your approval Bayou‘s new single “Varsity Jacket“. The London newcomer is turning heads with his buttery smooth lo-fi jams. He has previously released tracks titled “Cherry Cola” and “Forever Deluxe“. This latest track is his best in my opinion.
Drippy synths bounce around behind a mechanical beat to begin the song. Around the 5o second mark the chorus kicks in and it is abundantly clear that this track is something special. “Varsity Jacket” oozes hazy late night vibes.
It is quite the challenge to classify “Varsity Jacket” into a specific genre as it appears to have come from the future. Elements of R&B, Hip Hop, electronic with elements of pop. Bayou cites Michael Jackson as one of his first influences but it is clear he has a lot more floating around up in his head.
The immediate comparison that comes to mind is Jai Paul, which is both fair and a huge complement to Bayou. The lush instrumentals, and catchy chorus seem like something that could have come off Jai’s leaked album. If any clever hip hop artists are reading this, I suggest reaching out to Bayou immediately to produce some beats soon.
