Last time we posted about Tei Shi, the Argentinean-born Brooklyn dream girl, we were lauding her loops and giving her props for a stunning Beyoncé cover, yet she remained unsigned! Well, Tei Shi (Valerie Teicher) just signed to Mom+Pop imprint Mermaid Avenue in the U.S. and Double Denim in the U.K, and has promised loads of new material.
The first taste is Bassically, a haunting new track with some powerful lyrics, and a thumping, disco-inspired foundation. It’s a far-cry from the sick, sad world she crafted on her debut EP, Saudade, but in a way that leaves me excited for what’s to come. The track was released with very little pomp, but has already been picked up by a ton of other music news outlets, in part because of the feminist message the lyrics are supporting. Tei Shi taunts a simple-minded would-be suitor with lyrics like: Is that what you want, like the other boys?/ Someone you can flaunt like the other toys? The lyrics are as personal and easy to relate to as everything from Saudade, but with a danceable twist. Check the track out below, and enjoy The Eargazm!
