So it’s been an exciting couple days for hip-hop fans. ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron saw it’s official release yesterday (despite being leaked last week), Kid Cudi surprised us with a spacey new tracklist, and now Pharrell’s antipicated G I R L has reportedly leaked and is also available for streaming. Although there’s a lot of exciting material to choose from right now and I’ve been posting new Q for the past couple weeks, we can’t go on without acknowledging the A$AP Rocky-assisted bonus track off Oxymoron, Californication.
Anytime Q and Rocky get together in the studio the expectation is nothing less than for them to walk out with a banger. Hands On The Wheel is the more widely recognized collaboration between the two friends, but A$AP and TDE fans can name Brand New Guy as one of their favorites. A well-layered boisterous beat, it’s personally my favorite track off LiveLoveA$AP and serves as the first time I heard Q. Californication continues the high energy collaborative talents between Q and Rocky with a deep synth, minimal snare, and crowd noise that provides a simple instrumental which allows the artists to fill the rest of the space with their rhymes. Rock’s lines say it best:
“Just know that ASAP be that TDE/We got the game in headlocks; I’m talking DDT”
These two need to do a collaborative album, fans would kill for that project. I saw them in tour a year ago and they feed off energy’s style and energy effortlessly. Take a listen to Oxymoron and let us know what you think.
