Love’s Crushing Diamond, the debut full-length from Brooklyn via the Midwest’s Jordan Lee’s Mutual Benefit moniker is above all else a gorgeous record. Like Rip Van Winkle must have felt rising from an ancient bed of autumn leaves, Love’s Crushing Diamond is wrapped in warmth and awe. A synesthesiac experience of browns, golds and oranges, tracks start softly and build throughout.
Startling in their timelessness, these songs make the listener forget 2013. Strong Swimmer closes the albums, and takes its time doing so, running over seven minutes. A certain highlight nestled at the end of a consistently strong album, Lee muses on nature, survival and his relationship with it all. It’s a brilliant summation of a brilliant piece of music. The album is out now, but look for its re-release in December.
