There seems to be a major theme happening in American cinema as of late…and that’s to write screenplays that are based around the “future of earth”. We’ve seen multiple adaptations from writers and directors, all putting their own unique spin on what they think the future of earth might hold for civilization. One of these well known titles set to release in 2013 is Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. Oblivion is a science fiction film based on the Radical Comics graphic novel Oblivion by Joseph Kosinski and directed and co-produced by Kosinski. In 2073, a 37-year-old former Marine commander named Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth, which was nearly destroyed by an alien invasion 60 years earlier.
This is from the original soundtrack for the film, orchestrated by M83 with vocals by Susanne Sundfør. The last big piece of work that M83 released was in 2011 with their album, Hurry Up We’re Dreaming, so this is a treat. The score was composed by Anthony Gonzalez (M83) and Joseph Trapanese, who produced Daft Punk’s Tron score. With such an epic soundtrack, can we assume that the film will be AS epic? Perhaps, it’s got two of the biggest names in the industry..Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. Granted Mr. Freeman has made some questionable cinema choices throughout his career, but his ability to narrate trumps any bad movies that he has done. Tom Cruise’s career was solidified with Top Gun, so that’s not even arguable.
Keep your ears peeled for the entire soundtrack to be released on April 19th, by Back Lot Records…. just around the corner. M83 doesn’t have any upcoming tour dates, but like Morgan Freeman’s good to bad movie ratio, things are always subject to change. Check out this one called Oblivion, for the movie Oblivion…go Get Your Eyes & Ears Wet!
