My two takeaways from the movie Drive were that Ryan Gosling probably set the record for least words spoken by a lead character, and the killer soundtrack. The highlight track was College‘s “A Real Hero”. The track fit in perfectly with the futuristic 80’s vibe of the movie. The idea of a song about being a real human behind very un-human synths and angelic strings is strangely compelling. The track is one of the most memorable movie soundtrack moments of this era.
Needless to say it’s a tall task to cover a track with such a specific place in people’s hearts. If College’s version of the song takes place high in the sky, almost floating above the earth, then British band Saint Savanna‘s version takes place deep in a swamp. Deeper, earthier tones set the landscape for Saint Savanna‘s “A Real Hero”. You can almost hear the song rising up to the point where the vocal lines bend and drag out with perfection. It is simply beautiful, as if the voice is earnestly reaching for the sky. Because that is what real humans are like, always looking up yearning for more.
The band consists of Liam Fox, Jamie Verney, and Rob Mason. The trio was formed in late 2012 but you would never guess it with how great they already sound. You can pick up a copy of their EP Verona over at their Bandcamp page. Listen and enjoy the track below.
