The name on everyone’s lips in 2014 was FKA Twigs. Despite critical acclaim for her debut full-length, LP1, British singer Tahliah Barnett was subjected to unprecedented harassment after beginning a romantic relationship with actor, Robert Pattinson. Twigs expressed surprise at the grotesque statements hurled her way, and utilized them as inspiration for the visuals for Video Girl.
Now she’s finally released the video for her favorite song off the album, Pendulum. It’s predictably bizarre, and features Twigs in some Japanese-inspired rope bondage composed of her own hair. Shots flick back in forth between a scene of Barnett suspended from the ceiling and an image of her fighting against an identifiable liquid element. This is the kind of artist she’s proven herself to be; wresting creative control at all costs and transforming dark themes about the meanings of sexuality and celebrity into a kind of ephemeral beauty all while captivating audiences across the world.
After a Mercury nomination last year and the game-changing LP1, a few BRIT nominations seem completely validated. FKA Twigs is nominated for two awards: British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist.
