If you haven’t listened to Gary Clark Jr. yet, now is the perfect time to start. The Texas blues juggernaut has released the official video for his powerful cut “Numb” off his debut album Blak and Blu. The video is a perfect storm of raw blues energy that hits you in the gut like a ton of bricks. The black and white video starts with Gary regretfully waking up next to his girl but they seem to be in a bit of a rut, arguing about bills and other couple stuff. How will Gary inject some life back into his numb relationship, you ask? The coolest way possible. Drive his classic car out into the country and effortlessly lay down a soul stirring solo which seems to work just fine as the couple rides off into the sunset.
Although it’s an overplayed comparison, one cannot help compare Gary to Jimi Hendrix. His ability to strangle and manipulate the waves of raw electric energy blasting out of the guitar with such grace is something that you cannot teach. That has to be part of you. Jimi had it. Gary has it. There are tons of kids that turn the distortion up, maybe add a wah-wah pedal and play blues riffs to try to sound like Jimi, but Gary Clark has that same deeper understanding of how to harness the power of his guitar. Watching Gary play is like watching someone wrestle with the Kraken while yawning and checking their cell phone. After watching this it is video it is blatantly clear that Gary Clark Jr. is doing what he was put on earth to do.
